ABOUT ME

They missed the Mayflower, but Joyce’s maternal family pulled into Plymouth on the Hopewell in 1634. By the time, she was born 300 - years later, the Owen family found themselves on the wrong side of the Line in the rocky hills of Quebec.

Born-on-the Line people lose family to the south for some reason. She is equally at home in Southern California and parts of her heart live in Texas. To be born in the northern-most Appalachians, then, was to be rooted in an oral culture, for her family, especially the King James Bible read aloud, a musical introduction to the love of words.

Joyce was the second in the Owen family to go to university, by hook or crook, low-paying jobs and generosity. Knew she had taught English too long when she spent five minutes reading King Lear's curse to class out of Hamlet. Flawlessly.

Time to stop teaching.
